What US and Russia are doing in respect of Ukraine is in clear breach of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum which is a legally binding treaty concerning security assurances to Ukraine that gave up its nuclear weapons. As a party to the treaty, UK has special responsibility treaties.un.org/doc/Publicat...

Daily reminder of who Musk is:

The correct context for this is authoritarianism versus democracy. People need to realize that and choose a side.

seriously, it's not even like a coup at this point. it's just pure, mindless destruction and pillage and a divvying up of the spoils.

Democrats should release mock EO's that rename these orders. This one? COMMENCING THE REDUCTION OF PUBLIC SERVICES YOU ALREADY PAID FOR WITH YOUR TAX DOLLARS or COMMENCING THE ENDLESS WAITING IN LINES FOR PUBLIC SERVICES WE'RE CUTTING

I've read most of the analyses of the DOGE 2025 "receipts" site. This, from NPR, is the best I've read so far. Some of what they claim to have cut haven't been cut, other "cuts" will incur costs down the road. NPR says DOGE has made $2B of cuts, not $55B. www.npr.org/2025/02/19/n...

this ongoing spyware scandal seems likely to get considerably worse for meloni. kudos to @skirchy.bsky.social for staying on this.

CALIFORNIA — ex NFL punter Chris Kluwe arrested for civil disobedience protesting at the city council in Huntington Beach, where the council planned a “MAGA” display on a plaque at the library. Context: www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootb...

the "credible death threats" are that trump would kill their careers. *that* is what scares them - losing power, a seat in congress. every single one of these culpable careerists will be remembered for their complicity.

I regret to report that Ilan Wurman has filed a brief telling our SCt that there's "abundant historical support" for nondelegation doctrine in the 18c materials. I confess to having have some follow-up Qs. But for calibration, I'd like to start w/evidence cited in the brief. 1/

Grateful for all the librarians/archivists/federal staff working to preserve the info on govt websites before the Trump administration deletes it. Good article: www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/07/1... Thx to @eotarchive.org @freegovinfo.bsky.social @myqntm.bsky.social @davidakaye.bsky.social

my guess is that tens of millions of americans feel panic, not just opposition, concerning the trump rampage through government. lawsuits are critical. but the onus cannot just be on direct victims. political leaders need to speak to these fears and act.

Good morning. Our National Parks System makes about $10 for each $1 the government puts in. Just in case someone tells you they cut NPS budget to "save" money.

this is obvious content discrimination. report positively, or be owned by a supplicant (murdoch, bezos, soon-shiong), you're fine. global and critical, forget it, you're out.

trump is now effectively putin's wingman.

Wow: City of Clarksdale, Mississippi got a court order yesterday directing a newspaper to delete an editorial criticizing city officials -- without a hearing. Here's the TRO issuing the prior restraint:

i am ready to bet this is a lie

very affecting speech at oxford by judge/professor theodor meron, "the mystery of the holocaust".

Association of law schools reminds the chief justice of his own words

the association of american law schools (AALS) issues a statement on executive branch compliance with court orders that concludes with this. www.aals.org/app/uploads/...

short, sharp & almost certainly a reflection of elite thinking in europe 👇 "It is clear that the US can no longer be regarded as a reliable ally for the Europeans...America is also an adversary — threatening democracy in Europe and even European territory"

Easy decision to sign this.

I’m not sure the rest of the country fully grasps the panic and anger building in DC, MD, and VA. The entire economy of this area is about to collapse. Paychecks are stopping. Careers are ruined. Taxes are about to plummet. Yet no one seems able to stop this madness.

again, the actual leader of the democratic party today

as with the levitsky/way foreign affairs piece last week, this is essential reading by one of america's leading democracy scholars, @larrydiamond.bsky.social. it is grim but categorical & clear, and foreshadows an argument for containment. www.persuasion.community/p/the-crisis...

perhaps the first role of a genuine opposition party is to educate, raise awareness: what is trump doing and what are the implications for you, your security, family, health, rights? my sense: lots of people are worried but vastly more are in the dark. do the job, dems. break through the noise.

vance putting all his eggs in the "criminal insult" basket as a stand-in for generally "criminalizing speech" is tactical and bogus, b/c his administration is in fact the gravest threat to freedom of expression in the transatlantic space today.

trump has his state of the union in march. he will use it to propagandize & humiliate the democrats. should they boycott? give him and the nation a half-empty chamber? he would hate it & rise to the bait. i think it should be on the table.

They should have no access to our taxpayer data. They have no use for that in looking for efficiency. This should be illegal on their part to access this data without need.

authoritarians around the world use tax & other financial data to harass critics, journalists (just ask @mariaressa.bsky.social) & human rights activists. here's trump's illegal path toward access.

super thoughtful 🧵 important to note that trump is assaulting the public’s ability to know the consequences of his destruction. the combo of attacking media and blasting out propaganda is strategic and media has to invest in resisting and overcoming it.

Government’s wins are often invisible: Systems that avoid plane crashes; alliances that avert war; surveillance that prevent pandemics. Government wins are often *the avoidance of loss.* So how do we tell the story of the destruction of government? The story of future losses *not* averted?
