A friend is signing up for SS. She called and they told her benefits start a month after signing up. Called again with a question, told by another employee it takes over 2 months for benefits to start. Already chaos.

My best friend has been getting ready for a well deserved retirement. He has to file for SS. If he can't get it, he will not be able to afford to retire! I wonder how long the rest of us has, till they cut us all off!

My husband applied for retirement benefits in late 2023 and it took several times of standing in line at a local SSA office to get his application processed, as it was held up due to confusion about his naturalized citizen status. The whole thing took 5 months, before this whole mess.

My god, this directly impacts my 78 yo father who has an appt at the SSA today to process my mother’s recent death & apply as the recipient of her benefits. This is a normal practice. He made the appt over a month ago…Im so worried. At least it will be date stamped. They were married 58 years. 😭

These staff are really good in my experience. We did a similar process. We had to wait like your dad and they resolved the issue in the single contact. It was all about verification of a marriage record. Clearly this was a fraud prevention process.

There are indeed a solid group of people in these offices. I just worry about them being short staffed and potentially working while stressed. His visit went well overall but I just worry about the people and the importance of this and other agencies.

When I had to call SSA back in early January, the recorded message said that the wait time for retirement requests was well over 200 days. And that was with full staffing!
