My first day of college I saw a poster advertising AI classes in the hall on the way to my English class. They still haven’t been taken down. It’s pretty bleak out here.
I had a professor who wouldn’t allow us to use ANY source that we got from the internet, not even like JSTOR or EBSCO or whatever (This was in the mid-00s and the reference librarian at my school said she’d have a word with him).
Oh, yeah, he was an absolute dinosaur. When he said “no internet sources” we were nodding along and when he clarified that that included “print” resources *accessed* online we all went “wait, what?!”
To make matters worse, the library had just undergone a renovation and destroyed a lot of their back periodicals or moved them to long-term storage. But like I said, the reference librarian said they’d talk to him so idk if future semesters had to suffer the same way.
The lesser of two evils here is ensuring you put effort into what engenders most value. Why insist on gifting to someone something they value less when you can spend less resources giving them something less valuable that they value more?
I understand that by doing so, that choice of action may come back to haunt us. The butterfly effect makes it such that worrying about all the possibilities likely means 90% of what we're worrying about never comes to pass.
Before I quit teaching, I was so frustrated by an inservice where we were told to decide how much of a student’s work could be from ChatGPT. When I suggested none, I was told that’s hypocritical and then told to use it for lesson plans, grading, and replies to parent emails! It was so disheartening.
I know! I was speechless. No one is super excited about a mountain of grading but it’s such an important part of the job. It felt so surreal that I was the only one voicing objections, too.
My mother has to write narratives for the parents of her third graders every year, so they get a look into how they are doing. And the principal suggested chatgpt! like I thought this was supposed to be about the kids school experience not just random words.
This makes me so sad...but sadly doesn't surprise me. When I asked my administrator about using A.I. to reply to parent emails about their child's progress, he said (proudly!) he uses it. "Read it over and just change a few words and you're good!" Which is what every plagiarizer ever has said 🙄.
The one about letting A.I. grade and going to the pub? Heh, that’s funny but I could never do that. Grading can be exhausting but I always saw it as an important part of the job — especially for something they’ve written.
Oooooooooooh, then yes! Hahaha, sorry, I didn't read the tone correctly in the post. And humor as a coping mechanism was what got me through many moments in my teaching career!
My (swedish) uni actively adds instructions for every essay etc. that use of GAI in graded texts is forbidden and suspected use will be reported and investigated, also explaining that AI doesn't qualify as a scholarly source
