The rollout of the malaria vaccine is fascinating. Question to you as an infectious disease expert: is there past experience of rolling out a vaccine with effectiveness as low as this (75%) &, if there is, what are the lessons from that experience?

Yes that's certainly a possibility over time and will need to be monitored as these vaccines are being rolled out. Now it's simply too soon to tell if that's happening and to what extent.

This is the first time WHO has approved a vaccine with this low efficacy. RTS,S is only 30% effective and being rolled out too. The issue is Malaria cases and deaths have plateaued, insecticide and artemisinin resistance is ⬆️ and so a new add tool is needed.

Additionally the vaccines in the implementation pilot had significant impact on all cause mortality and the potential to prevent up to 300,000 infant deaths a year per modeling predictions. Time will tell their real world impact but certainly worth the shot
