In the absence of a vaccine HIV PrEP is one of the best tools we have to reduce new HIV infections. 4000 adolescent girls in Africa are newly infected with HIV every week. Not being able to give them or their male partners PrEP will cause infections to soar.

Also the breach of trust in these communities is likely irreversible. These communities are not passive recipients of aid, the participate in research that informs hiv prevention and care globally. Themes I covered in this Ted talk in 2013, resonate in 2025.

When you issue an exemption & have to keep issuing clarifications bcos of the scale of unmitigated damage a policy is causing it is because the programs being cut are important, essential and life saving and absolutely not "waste". Also exemptions do not resolve staffing nor do they restore trust.

Much as I'd like to hope otherwise, it's difficult to believe anything they're saying about PEPFAR - USAID staff is reportedly being reduced from ~14,000 to 294, with just 12 on the African continent. I'm incandescent with rage.

I hope African nations can find a way to band together to manufacture their own pharmaceuticals. Its just not feasible to rely on Colonial nations.

This will devistate the future of Africa by killing its children. I worked on the Phase I and II trials of Zidovudine to prevent maternal-infant HIV transmission in the 1999s. Today, without PrEP, over 2/3 of babies born to those women will die of AIDS before they can walk.

Beyond the naked racism and wanton cruelty behind this- are they genuinely so clueless as to believe that all you have to do to prevent vertical transmission of HIV is make it through the pregnant and nursing phases of life? Also don’t these kids deserve… idk… a healthy parent to care for them?
