I would love to make a cross country road trip but I only hit the natural history museums. I'd like that one, there's one out west of buffalo that features some in feet-off-ground poses with stampede audio, & I have GOT to go to the Chicago Field Museum. Carnegie & American Museum were both amazing.

Make your hopes and wishes known! All too often the museum is operating feedback-blind and have to guess based on what brings people in the door. Tell them what'll bring you in! Tell them what they've done right and why you like it. :)

An excellent display will pay attention to the fine details. The main feature is the large predator and pray, but the vole trails complete with trace droppings is what puts the exhibit over.

That's their ultimate joy. Sure the big obvious animals and action are what grab you first. But then you stay and keep looking and keep finding all new aspects of life in the habitat the diorama is based on.

I recall a display in a museum that had those fine details. It was like I was in the field rather than an indoor space.

Years later, I saw a display at a huge sporting goods store. It was beyond lame. Just a stuffed animal standing on hay.

It lit a fire in my mind too. Being able to work from something 3 dimensional was a completely different experience than using photos for me. Glad to know there once was another weird teen out there drawing the taxidermy!

I LOVED this sort of display when I was a kid. Sometimes the predators were legitimately terrifying behind the glass. But they were always so cool. That is so rad you used to do that! Do you ever post photo's from that period of your life?

I keep a small portfolio on my site, but those pictures were taken so long ago that I really need to make a cross trek to photograph them all again in better resolution. Here's a few that are specifically dioramas. My mentor was the director of exhibits at the Schiele Museum & built most himself.

This is SO GOOD! We had a natural museum next to the art college, but the dioramas were so bland and static, we almost never went.

There are some bad ones out there; my mentor was the director of exhibits at the Schiele Museum for many years and as such he inherited the founder's taxidermy--Mr. Bud Schiele. Most of those were just critters standing around in cases with a little bit of environment at the base & basic backdrops.

He also did not like any of his male taxidermy having testicles so they're all neutered lol. But even static ones have some value; I can still remember standing under a full body moose there and realizing A) how HUGE they were and B) how tiny I was.

I have a swan and an otter that fit this description. They’re great specimens, but very static. The swan was free and I’m to have it. Not going to look a gift Snow White cobra chicken in the terrifying beak!
