Yup. While there may be plenty of great independent journalists without reliable, trusted, new sources the crazies will get just as much air time. The new way is no better that I can tell.

Agreed. I think what we should take from it is that no matter what media structure we evolve into, there’s no substitute for teaching people media literacy skills. Those with nefarious intentions (or the well meaning but lost) will always find a way to muddle things.

While this is part of the problem, I think if critical thinking was a larger part of our general curriculum, we wouldn't be quite so screwed as we are at the moment.

Agreed. Unfortunately, even if we tried to make critical thinking a bigger and more overt part of the curriculum, Republicans would find a way to frame it as a ploy to trans the kids or force critical race theory onto three year olds. It’s hard to make progress against bad faith opponents.

There’s definitely truth to that. Though I think some sort of preexisting foundation would go a long way in curbing those kinds of mistakes. I just don’t know a practical way to create that foundation on a mass level. I think a mix of cultural pressure and education would have to come together.

Part of the problem that lead to this issue is the push im education for a heavy focus on STEM, which lead to the atrophy of media literacy we see now. I am not advocating for the pendulum to swing the other way, I think we need to come to a solution that covers STEM and the 'soft' subjects.

It is not the role of English teachers to teach which news stations to trust. We teach persuasive language cues, but being the news police by verifying stats is not the realm of English teachers. Ethics of journalist and media corp requires a govt role. A few simple laws would fix it all.

Not sure media literacy should be taught by English classes. But media is definitely taught in many schools and could easily teach how to verify bullshit by investigating many sources.

Journalism teachers teach this, but most students don’t take journalism because there is generally only one journalism teacher in the school who also teaches yearbook and newspaper. Not enough J teachers for the whole school. If I were principal, J would be a required Junior level class.

There are solid independent journalists. I don't think most people are smart. Enough to figure out who and we'll seek to confirm biases, just like with legacy media

I saw Musk trumping (ha!) the phrase, "We are the media!" Like he, me or you are going to report from the frontlines of Donbas or Gaza. Let's not confuse opinion pieces with news or "the truth".
