What DEI appears to be and what it actually is are two entirely different things

“Ageing Australia to lean on millions more migrants: Treasury The average age of the Australian population will keep rising, and women will have fewer babies, but the population is forecast to grow by more than 4 million people over the next decade, thanks to strong migration.” - AFR | 20/12/2024

Grounded conversation on the topic of Feminism, with Roni Fouks and Carrie Gress

Those who focus solely on large-scale issues often completely disregard the smaller ones. This is usually because it’s hard to justify the time and resources spent on minor details, and showcasing big wins is much easier

I highly recommend everyone reading this to subscribe to the starter pack below

If you look at problems only at a high level, there’s a good chance you’re looking at their outcomes. Trying to fix outcomes without addressing the actual problems achieves nothing, and more outcomes will keep appearing. Want to fix problems? Look into the details

When discussing productivity, why doesn’t anyone consider that if key financial goals—like owning a home, starting a family, or pursuing education—are out of reach for most people without taking on massive, lifelong debt (which carries risks), the motivation to remain productive diminishes?

One of the caveats of social media is that it’s hard to distinguish truly like-minded people from those who simply appeal to you because you’re the target audience for their content

People are overly fixated on increasing their pay relative to things like housing, rent, and groceries, rather than considering how to bring those costs down. This mindset extends even further into areas like CEOs’ pay

One of the few topics I’m genuinely happy to see on social media these days is people sharing their excitement about protected bike lanes being added to the roads they ride

You don’t hear about gender equality issues once women are represented well beyond 50%

If you think social media channels and podcasts are better than traditional media, think again. Most follow where money and attention go (attention economy). Even those starting strong often deteriorate into crowd and sponsor pleasers

The original idea of journalism was probably about keeping readers and listeners informed—an activity that has intrinsic value and is important enough to be rewarded. This has evolved into content manufacturing, with readers and listeners now being targets for a new class of customers

There are no 100% capitalist countries (at least for now or in the foreseeable future), nor should there be. Unchecked capitalism in the long term would lead to pretty bad outcomes

Indeed, it’s fascinating how peccancies once deemed ignominious have transmogrified into quaint vestiges of human cogitation. Typos are no longer mere blemishes but idiosyncratic imprimaturs—proof of sapient deliberation, ineffably organic and irreducibly authentic.

People should start tattooing Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to remind themselves what’s essential for a healthy society. Low fertility rates? Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Depression? Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Anxiety? Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. And so on

It’s not just important to learn lessons—it’s crucial to learn the right ones

The left doesn’t want to be like the right. The right doesn’t want to be like the left. And the most vocal representatives of both act like complete morons

When someone says something that a lot of people agree with, step back and ask yourself if it actually makes any sense (chances are, it doesn’t). Maybe ask yourself a few times to be sure. If needed, take the time to learn more about the topic

It’s both entertaining and sad to see how media relentlessly pushes the agendas they’re instructed to promote. Some, like Guardian Australia, even disable comments to stifle conversation and suppress opposing views

While economic indicators may correlate with quality of life under specific conditions, they are certainly not an accurate reflection of it
