My hot take is Spider-Man fans are actually ridiculously easy to please and it's bizarre that Marvel simply doesn't do that as it wouldn't hurt their bottom line at all

"It sells" is a thought terminating cliche. Yes it does so why do this when you could do anything and see the same, or potentially better result? Like USM has proven
Ironically if they just did that in the main universe it would sell well and they could do all this weird stuff to their hearts content in mini series.
Actually they might. If it's year 3 of Peter and MJ let's say fixed. And it's not going to end you will get some people to go take a look at a work where he's with black cat. Or whatever. The problem now is they have so much hatred built up everything gets rejected. To use DC as an example
Now that Clark and Lois are good again when they do other things they can wander again I won't be interested im a Peter and MJ in every universe because of the bond that gives but there would be some interest.
The way ASM has been written the last few years makes me wonder if there’s some sort of vendetta against the characters/readers. So many decisions go beyond mediocrity and seem to actively go against with what fans want.

Hell, I’ve been writing letters to Lowe, and his response was to send me a post card basically saying “Sorry you don’t like it. Bye!”
