When my kids were in HS I used to joke that some of this curriculum along with the reading list was designed to depress them but on the other hand, given the awful path we are on currently, the kids need to know these ugly parts of history, now more than ever. Get that kiddo an ice cream!

I keep thinking about how history is so often taught as a distant part of the past. We need to reframe how we teach it; history was just yesterday and everything that has happened continues to affect us in some way today.

None of this was taught in my public school in World History when I was in High School either and I graduated in 1972. And in American History we took a few days on the Civil War however nothing about slavery as a major cause & nothing about any of the massacres of either blacks or indigenous people

It's not in the curriculum (it ends after WW2) but my kids know allll about the genocide in Gaza, and the history of Palestine and the cause of Palestinian liberation. I don't think a day goes by where my son isn't taking us on a history deep dive or schooling me about some current event.

Very heavy stuff. I am 66. They didn’t teach this stuff when I was in school. But then I’m an Air Force brat and I went to 16 schools. I’m glad they learn it now.

When I was a kid/teen they didn't teach here about Aktion T4. That's why it was easy to not see that libertarianism and similar far right ideologies are Nazism.

Excellent! It should be required. My dad fought in many battles and had a hand in liberating concentration camps during WWII. I never really learned much about it in school, just from my dad. If my generation had been better students of history, we may not be in this predicament now.
