Militarily, the US holds the leadership. SACEUR is always a US officer, and the US provide much of the staffing and structural presence. One of the reasons that NATO works (sort of) is that the accepted US primacy reduces inter-European rivalry.
I’m not saying the US pulling out won’t cause problems, I’m saying that NATO means that Europe can take over NATO/build a new fully integrated force/alliance incredibly quickly - much quicker than if they had to throw together 30 disparate militaries

I don't actually think that the US would pull out of NATO, even under Trump, though a large reduction of US support will likely occur.
