My DOOM story:

I downloaded a WAD file to add Aliens to the game. But I made a mistake and no animated Aliens were generated. I walked down dripping hallways and creepy corridors for hours, unaware. One of the best game experiences of my life.

Oh man, I would get home from an IT support center gone straight to perdition fire up my Gateway 486 DX 66, boot "Doom" up , give myself the BFG 9000, go into " God " mode , and just blast the occurrences of the day away. This was in an era where home computing was fun.

PS- there were a lot of " mods " to Doom One was a "Simpsons" mod where the first aid kits were changed to a box of donuts , the elixirs were now "Duff" Beer, and the invading creatures were turned into evil characters from the show. When you suffered damage, you'd hear Homer go "Doh!"

You'd be surprised how long those hung around! I bought MS-DOS 6.22 on 5.25 floppy and that came out in '94

Heh crazy, I don't think I ever saw any new game on 5.25" by then (and before PC took over computer gamers over here would mostly have Atari ST or Amiga, so 3.5" really felt the norm already)

I did had a handful of games with both set of disks but they were also used games.

Yeah I was definitely behind the times with an old Tandy that my mom bought secondhand for me. It does seem unlikely that any computer that could run Doom wouldn't have had a 3.5 drive!
