That would make me sad. I have learned about books I haven’t read yet by viewing other people’s 20 book challenge posts. Some of those posts are by published authors. I lookup the books they have read. I think a discussion would be good but disagree with eliminating the 20 book challenge.

I initially liked the 20 book challenge but I’m now seeing ppl say - let’s do another 20 book challenge, and they aren’t generating a lot of conversation. So while I haven’t muted it yet, it may be coming for me!

Also- I’ve noted- lots of ppl want interaction but, I rarely see them reply to anything, some users treat a like as a finite resource, and a lot of the TikTok community forget that there isn’t a TT type algo here. What I’m seeing is sort of ppl trying to adjust but using “old rules”

Been telling people the same thing. You have to chat with people and build mutual communities around similar interests. Likes should prove you are doing or saying something right, not a means to ‘go viral’ or whatever you would call it.

Oh yes! I try to mute all the challenges but it’s a job. And the authors … they are so boring. Most don’t engage, they just post notices about their books. I try to mute them too, but it’s also a job. If you could get rid of all of that it would be wonderful.

YES! Please! I feel like authors have taken over the booksky feed and there isn't a much organic engagement. I've been using muted words to thin it out but it's hard.

Yeah one of the 'rules' is that authors not advertise more than they're contributing other posts but it's not really possible for me to enforce that and as a result I think we are seeing a lot more Amazon links than we used to in the main feed which is good (authors getting paid) & bad (it's a lot)

I don't think that any individual author is doing that (maybe a few), but there are just so many, it feels like the feed is just advertising and promotion. No way would i ever say they can't promote their work, but a discussion only feed or emoji zip code would help.

My gut says everyone might migrate there leaving BookSky an inactive feed. Maybe a feed for challenges?

It’s hard enough to get people to figure out how to use BookSky, I hate to send people to another feed to talk books.

I don’t mind the book self-promotion because it can be good conversations.

So traffic to the main #BookSky 📚💙 feed is actually down pretty significantly from January! February has us averaging about 5k posts per day so far. It's up over the last few months overall from 2024 numbers due to #booktok migrating here and continued problems on X.

I don't have great data on this (though I hope @graze.social will add this soon 🤓) but my hunch is that the smaller/niche feeds actually have much higher engagement per post which is I think what most people are after.

The big #booksky feed moves FAST and is increasingly full of Amazon links plus..

the perpetual 20 Book Challenges which I know some people really love and other people really hate.

The hope with the BookSky Chat feed is that the right people find it and enjoy it, but I still think that directing people to the main #booksky feed first is the move.

I thought about making a separate feed for challenges too but most people barely understand what a feed is & SO many people do the challenges, it sounds like a moderation nightmare. I think the people who want the BookSky Chat feed are likely more advanced bsky users who are ready for something new.
