Always find it quite strange - and I do know a few of them - how anyone over, say 18, (outside of playful performative nonsense) can genuinely hate someone who supports a different football team.

Exactly. Rangers and Celtic have cultivated the bigotry and division to boost their finances, they need it and they thrive because of it. They are two cheeks of the same vile arse.
Well allowing a large section of their support to sing songs in support of the IRA without condemnation would be a good starting point. You thrive on it, suggesting otherwise makes you look like a blinkered imbecile.
Another is the claim that it’s solely the two big Glasgow clubs’ fault when it manifests in other parts of Scottish football. People find the singing of rebel songs offensive, but to equate them with anti Catholic bigotry is unhelpful and only serves to encourage the rebellious songbook.
Primarily Rangers and Celtic though, that's not even up for debate. You certainly dont hear a single sniff of that pish at Pittodrie, McDiarmid Park, Dingwall etc, do you?
One of the biggest issues in being able to tackle ‘sectarianism’ in Scotland effectively is the repeated claim that it’s two cheeks of the same arse, which is clearly not the case.
I presume that you're referring to the Christmas pantomime in Glasgow yesterday? It's not really about the football, is it? Match day just provides the context and the opportunity for sectarianism hatred to play out. I wonder how many of the knuckle draggers even went to church before the game?
I’ve bought my son a Rangers and a Celtic top. It’s weird listening to the nasty comments from opposing fans. Kids are more tolerant, but horrid to watch when they’re not. Adults still passing down the old traditions?
Its a great point - almost all kids' strongest prejudice comes from adults around them. I had no close adult acquaintances that supported rangers, and yet I absorbed it off my classmates. Fortunately, my football ties are skin deep - I supported arsenal as a kid and now my son & I support spurs
Once got introduced to a friend of a friend in a pub, had a chat over a couple of pints, i later heard he said about me "i couldn't be friends with someone who doesn't like football"
I’ve never seen you at Tynecastle cheering on the Jam Tarts! But it’s cultural isn’t it, all part of the banter. I am a Newcastle fan, I don’t hate the Mackems but I am guilty of laughing at their expense. But I also hope they, and the Smoggies, get back to premier football. Good for the NE.
I’ve got an acquaintance (used to be a friend until he voted for Brexit) 70 years old, Sheffield Utd supporter, literally detests anyone supporting or having anything to do with Sheffield Wednesday. Pathetic.
I don’t hate anyone because they support a different team, but l do hate certain teams because 90% of the people I know that support them are absolute dicks.
I’ve had men in their 50’s / 60’s threaten me as I walk through another town in my team’s colours. We get bad club rivalry at Wales too despite attempts to eliminate it.
Hey Irvine! Completely off topic but… I’m loving Dead Men’s Trousers! I’m picturing either Christopher Eccleston (How ironic would that be! 😉) or Ralph Fiennes as Victor Symm!
At university, my student job was to work the car park for (American) football. I once saw two 60+ year old men come to blows because they were wearing different shirts. I used to care a lot about sports, but that was the end of it. I still follow & enjoy, but can’t imagine getting that worked up.

to instantly not like them.
But have Everton and Man Utd supporting friends.
Think it's just immaturity.
