Yes, a lot of racists in this country. And yet, immigrants are still desperate to get here because while things are far from perfect, liberal democracy creates freer and safer societies. Unfortunately we might be losing that liberal democracy.

I had a conversation with a guy that used to be in the military and he said “imperialism is bad, but US imperialism is good”. They really think that the U.S. spends so much money on the military to keep the rest of the world safe and not to intimidate them for its own benefit and self interest.

He kept saying it like it was an annoying burden and self service to other countries. “Why do we keep helping other countries and not our own”. He thinks we NEED to spend that much on the military to fight Russia and China, but doesn’t see the problem is because of thinking like that.

In practical terms, I had more freedom in TT growing up than anyone in the US. Sure, I could be stopped at a random roadblock by the police looking for drugs, which the Fourth Amendment should prevent. But somehow “stop and frisk” existed despite that.

I was shocked to learn of curfews for minors, of open container laws. All sorts of small impingements on freedom in the US that felt so alien to me.

As a resident alien, laws saying I needed to keep my pass book - sorry- green card - on me at all times.

Yes, TT isn’t safe now, overrun with guns (mostly of US origin) and gangs (which became more violent in the 90s thanks to deportees who learned that culture in the US).

People come to the US for economic opportunity. But without imperialist extraction, that would be different too
