My dad, a career U.S. Army artiilery officer who was on active duty on Dec 7, 1941, held much the same views as you do about the dangers of military unpreparednees. He had five sons who understood his views. Unsurprisingly, four of those five sons (me included) also served in the U.S. Army.

It is often hard to explain human cruelty and its danger to those who do not have firsthand experience. I've shared battlefield stories and even showed pictures to non combat veterans, but it is not the same. They have spent their entire lives in societies under the rule of law.
