Riley Leonard loves talking about his close personal friend Jesus and I have to imagine it drives a small but loud portion of the lifelong mass-attending Catholic Notre Dame fanbase absolutely nuts

Sorry, I slightly mispoke. SMU's board of trustees changed its charter to make it independent, then the church sued it to say SMU couldn't do that. The case is now before the Texas Supreme Court.
If you're the type to believe Jesus picked your team in a college football game and made sure your team won, you're also likely to be the type to think that disagreeing with anti-LGBT church policy is a reason for Jesus to hate SMU, and therefore caused it to lose to Penn State.
Of course, this is ridiculous. Jesus would have been more likely to agree with SMU not the homophobic policy statements of the UMC (which has since reversed course after conservative congregations, still unsatisfied and wanting even more draconian anti-LGBT language and policies, split).
he met his personal charismatic Lord and Savior in high school, and I definitely prefer that over being an adult Catholic convert (though Freeman converted recently and he's normal about it)
THIS right here is why I have hated Notre Dame sports for as long as I can remember and will forever root against them. This guy ain't the first one to think and say ND is annointed by god.
I left catholicism like a decade ago and I still find it an obnoxiously protestant phrase unbefitting a notre dame quarterback (and I never even liked notre dame)
I'll play the ignorance card with regard to Mobile and it's religious affiliations, but when I hear a southern kid (or anyone else really) talk like this, it does not scream "I am a Catholic"
Absolutely not! That's the fun part. He's from as Catholic-y kind of area as Alabama is going to have and he goes to Notre Dame, but he uses all the wrong words.
He sounds like all the kids that wanted to show everyone that they were the best Baptist at the Baptist summer camp I worked at. I'm positive that God didn't help you win the three legged race Kelly.
Jesus was actually literally looking over the shoulder of an Ohio State player when he threw a pretty killer left hook in that melee with Michigan. Kept those Wolverines at bay.
You're right on that point, but the way he's talking is more evangelical. And that could cause some friction because Catholics may (often rightly) feel targeted by some evangelicals as needing to be "saved."
If you're asking me, yes, but some born-again believers don't think so. I've heard many say they were "saved" from Catholicism or were trying to save others. Not all, but the ones who do are pretty loud about it (don't really agree with them, just very aware it exists).
It just screams naivety and a very egocentric world view. And I hope some day these athletes and people gain a better understanding of their faith, life and perspective.
Imagine so misunderstanding the New Testament that you think public displays of faith lead to direct intervention by god in the outcomes of sporting events.
As an ND grad, I'm hoping he just meant this literally--like, you can see Touchdown Jesus on the library from the field, and it looks like he's looking over your shoulder. But probably not!
I like the idea of Jesus as an Ohio State fan, doing whatever he can to stop that playcalling against Michigan, coming up short because Chip Kelly is stronger than God
Yup. This is what is wrong with supposedly religious people. They choose teams. What ever happened to love everyone?
"But MY religion is right!" "But my God is better than your God!" "I pray better than you!" "God supports MY team!"
It's all ludicrous. Why don't we all just care about humanity?
I've always assumed the opposite: The Father chooses one team and Jesus the other. If you can divine which, you can determine who is most powerful at the moment. The Holy Ghost is mostly into poker tournaments.
This doesn't top Dabo saying God was with Clemson or whatever when they beat a school literally named Southern METHODIST University in the ACC championship.
Little known fact: SMU amended its charter to declare itself independent from the United Methodist Church after the church enacted policies in 2019 to make them more anti-LGBT. UMC sued to challenge SMU's right to self-governance & arguments were heard today in the TX Supreme court.
in HS I knew a Egyptian kid who played QB in Pop Warner and threw absolute lasers whenever we played flag or two hand. mom made him stop playing. huge ‘what if’ guy for me
Definitely drives me nuts. With all the suffering and chaos in the world, God is going to intervene in the outcome of college football games? What a freaking narcissist -
In addition to the existence of Dabo, Cade Klubnik literally painted massive crosses on his face every week. If he finds out about this, expect him to play with a literal wooden cross strapped to his back next season.
"and when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets."

It's awfully easy to dunk on this sincere young man expressing a simple faith. That's why so many people should do it. Let's see who's the best dunker!

I’m rating 7 out of 10
Now, if he were pagan, Odin would certainly have favorites. Just not Notre Dame or Ohio State
Like, I do live around there, but we're not friends. We've never met.

he's too busy rehabbing his injury so he can get back
into the Arsenal lineup
One of my faves!
"But MY religion is right!" "But my God is better than your God!" "I pray better than you!" "God supports MY team!"
It's all ludicrous. Why don't we all just care about humanity?
Lifelong Catholic, taking long drag on cigarette: God was busy and you know it

(Giving my head a shake.) What is wrong with these people??

Such vile stupidity.
On the other hand, maybe it is a relatively meaningless football game no one will remember in a year outside of their fanbases.
Normal Christians don't preach
Irish would be considered pretty Catholic back in day,but would maybe mention God in a very casual sense
Thanks be to god or God was on our side today
Jesus is not your buddy, he’s your weird uncle who still lives with your grandmother for some reason
Actuallly, I prob know this answer (Jerry Sandusky + coverup for PSU and Texas for being so Texas)
But why does he hate Boise State?? Weird
