That's funny, I had an electrician at my place for other reasons and him unwire a switch for a similar reason but this would have been so much easier

It's probably a switch that controls the outlet that the router or modem is plugged in to. Those are ostensibly designed for floor lamps, but it'll control anything you plug in to that outlet.

Usually they’re designed for floor lamps, but our basement is wired so all the high up outlets are connected to a switch, and the modem and router are hooked up to one of those

the house we're renting has too many switches for a lot of lights; one of the upstairs hallway lights is broken, too, so if it's on, none of the other hallway lightswitches work???
