Portland famously doesn’t fluoridate its drinking water and every time I go to the dentist I get told “oh you didn’t grow up here did you” because dentists can tell that shit at a glance. It’s such an easy thing to do to improve public health.

The quality started dropping, because the town was getting bigger and we weren't replenishing the aquifers. So a bold new water treatment plant was built in conjunction with another city.
This raised water prices for the first time in thirty years.
"We HAVE to do this." said the city, "If we don't, then when water quality drops further, we start getting fined daily. And THEN the project will be a rush job and cost three times as much!"
About halfway through the construction, well monitors picked up something bad.
So... That's how we got better water from the river.
I still say it tastes funny, ten years later.
I can count on one hand the number of cavities I've had in my entire lifetime.
