My granny was a big fan. One of those, a quilt and flat sheets - tucked in so tightly you couldn't straighten your feet. None of this duvet nonsense.

Ticking fire, wrestling on the TV, that peculiar smell of lily, lavender and coal tar, the pantry seething with custard powder, camp coffee and tinned carrots, the piano lid creaking, the horse racing on the other side, the tiny Christmas tree and ancient tinsel, the blankets and the bedspread…

My grandfather did woodcarving as a hobby, and had made a beautiful pair of bellows for the fire. The smell was wonderful

Oh yes! Mine was a rose pink. Also ‘the downie’ a small, thick, quilted eiderdown made of a slippery fabric so it used to fall off the bed. That was deep pink.

When I got my own bedroom aged 8 in 1972, I had deep pink nylon sheets, a pale pink candlewick bedspread and a deep pink, pale pink and white crocheted bedspread made by by godmother, grandma and great aunt ❤️

I absolutely did love it! Bit sad that not a single photo was ever taken of the room or the bedding. I benefitted from having two brothers so didn’t have to share 🙂

I’m the eldest and have two sisters and a baby brother. Apart from three years of blissful solo state 9-12 I had to share with one sister and then the other. Brother always had his own room.
