Anyone merely charged with certain crimes - theft and domestic battery being among them is required to be "mandatorily detained" - being placed and held in an ICE detention facility without bail --until the case is resolved. This could take years. ICE can shunt the alien to any facility it likes.
Because what happened to that girl is horrific. That's why people support the bill on a pretty popular level from both sides. I personally think it should focus on violent crimes but here we are.
What happened to her was tragic but that’s stripping rights away from everyone for the actions of a few individuals. Imagine if we stripped voting rights from Republicans after the Jan 6th insurrection, sure not every republican is a traitor but hey what they did was horrific.
Do you see now?
Let me put it to you this way.
Guns cause horrific trauma all over the USA, if the Dems put in a law to remove people’s weapons without due process based on a jay walking crime, would you support that?
That’s essentially what this law does, it’s unconstitutional and is a violation of our rights.
Damn Democrats keep thinking if they're Diet Republican people will vote for them. That's not what the electorate wants from them? Will they ever learn?
I am pleased to see that both of my Oregon Senators (Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley) voted no. I have emailed them both to thank them for their leadership. It's not over when we lose; it's over when we quit. But yeah: fuck the rest of them.
Is there still a chance for the house to block it? Trying to understand but it's not clear to me... Will write my rep if there's a chance for it to matter
The House just passed it. Around 50 Dems bucked the Party to join the Republicans to pass it. It will become law now. All that needs to be done is for Trump to sign it. I'm appalled by this.
Agree. No money from me. This is a piece of trash legislation. It sickens me. "Mandatory" ICE detention for persons merely ACCUSED of criminality. Sorry, but Dems voting for this are cowards. I don't care what state they're in. If you won't fight bad laws, I don't help you ever again.
The #LakenRileyAct introduces the priciple that incanceration is mandatory for minor ALLEDGED law infrictions without the right of due process.
Breaking down the principle of due process is a major building block of facist state management.
This must be obvious to all lawmakers when supporting it.

And Dems would rather throw all of us into the void than fight.

THAT'S WHY.
Congress has staff for this, but apparently that STAFF is for show.

Equally DEPLORABLE Ignoring
Texas saw an approximate 63% increase in maternal mortality between 2018 and 2020, with rates jumping from 17.0 to 27.7 deaths per 100,000 live births
Perhaps this explains why they rolled so easily and wouldn’t even investigate voting.
