He didn't just say he plans to use Guantanamo as some kind of warehouse for people being deported. He said they're going to hold people there indefinitely. Not being deported under immigration laws. Not incarcerated after a criminal conviction. Just kept there, with no legal basis, on his say-so.

For democratic backsliding into authoritarianism in the United States, Orban in Hungary is cited as the main model, with nods to Putin in Russia and Erdogan in Turkey. But Modi in India is a closer parallel than Russia or Turkey, and shows a version of where the US may be going. Thread.

Republicans have been making the case against birthright citizenship since at least the 80’s/90’s - it was a big concern of their 1996 convention, which tracked in my 2001 book, Democracy and the Foreigner. There are some firsts here, but this is also a long old story for Republicans.

Women's wrestling just became an official NCAA sport. Its stunning rise was fueled by a massive persuasion campaign to get high schools to add girls' teams. That push had a surprising knock-on effect: a boom in boys' wrestling, too. www.wsj.com/sports/women...

Just had our data access rescinded for a projected using federal microdata to study and reduce disparate impact in housing markets.

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH** * Currently paused by Executive Order ** Grant reviews now all canceled www.kcur.org/news/2025-01...

Days before the ceasefire, Jared Kushner DOUBLED his stake in an Israeli firm invested in illegal settlements in the West Bank and Golan Heights. Now, Trump is interested in “rebuilding” Gaza — “A phenomenal location. Right on the sea. The best weather.”

I am as disgusted as anyone by White House pool reporters welcoming the Trump administration because access, AND Progressive organizers and politicians at all levels need to get very clear that communications work is (like all organizing) fundamentally a relationships game.

Yes, I saw this, and yes, it's horrendous.

Mutual aid is not just a disaster response, it’s a way of caring for one another, building stronger communities, and preparing for whatever life may throw at us next. It’s a labor of love—and a way of life. I put together a reading list (and words of advice) for LitHub: lithub.com/we-only-have...

We are contending with a GOP that knows how to win the most important factor that shapes perception: attention. Understanding this is step one. Step two is actually changing it. Dems need a whole new strategy. Fighting the attention war is a key part of my platform.

This is literally how fascism works.

It seems very obvious to me that the message to run on will be that you had your country stolen by lowrent scammers and con artists who must be punished

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.

It should prob be remembered that “birthright citizenship” was the product of the abolitionist mvt, which understood that no person of color would be safe from deportation or bondage if their citizenship could be questioned or taken away

it's gonna work too if they manage it. just set up a recurring donation to Wikipedia donate.wikimedia.org/w/index.php...

Trump's working majorities in Congress are substantially larger than the number of Republicans in each chamber.

It's difficult to overstate just how much professional journalists have been trained to fear defamation lawsuits and how much it has impacted the ability to tell the truth

History has consistently demonstrated that direct support for authoritarianism is relatively narrow. It thrives through surrender and acquiescence by elite institutions.

When you stop and think about it a little bit, it's downright weird for the government to care *that* much what exactly is in your pants

Well this is quite an opener

It's going to be helpful, in coming days, for reporters who write about executive orders to have an informed lawyer on speed dial to help them report accurately on what the President can and can't do by executive order.

Given the context of the moment we're in, Trump opening Tik Tok back up has a real "bread and circuses" vibe to it

Excellent NYT interview with the outgoing U.S. ambassador to Hungary. This is a key insight!

I feel this in my bones, but the even more serious problem is that we don’t actually know who is buying these, which is why it is also quite likely an unconstitutional emoluments clause violation. Could be any number of foreign governments, too.

And our elected officials have sped this along by making his rise as frictionless as possible. They haven’t just rejected resistance; they’ve made it seem like millions of us never imagined an alternative

I wrote about whether sustainable investing can survive Trump (spoiler:yes) but how the industry is finally ditching the ESG term to mean sustainable. This one is free to read! on.ft.com/4jofU4j
