For perfect rock band, The Who is a hill I’ll die on. But agree. The Kinks don’t get the respect they deserve. Dave, I once read (true?), got his fuzzed out guitar sound on YRGM by slicing the cones in the speakers on his amp with a razor blade. DIY punk!
(Narrator Keith Morrison voice) And in 1981 a suburban 15 year old, discovering himself and the music that would shape him, bought and played endlessly the 45 for “Destroyer”, much to the chagrin of his parents.
Amazing band. Great songs, with powerful and deep meaning lyrics.
Comes to my mind ’Days’ and ‘Come Dancing’. Both about nostalgia, memories, love of valuable moments in the past spent with loved ones.
Darn tootin'! EVERYTHING the Kinks did from '64 to '71 is a cut above. A very close second for me is The Pretty Things, and I guess they kinda burn out at around '71 too.
My hot take about the Kinks is they are better than the Beatles and one of the most underrated rock bands, I know they're bigger in the UK but they really only have a handful of hits here.
I watched a programme about their village green album and it had a couple of talking heads saying they thought the kinks were better than the Beatles(Andy partridge was one). It's a debate that has legs.
At my son’s house one afternoon, my granddaughter walks in, grins and puts the kinks on. I immediately starting singing along and she starts laughing & said my son (her dad) bet her he could make me sing. 😍
16 y/o me & buds lucked into front row for Kinks at Fillmore East. Mailed in for tickets before the show was even announced.
Bonzo Dog Band opened. Kinks were 2nd bill to headliners Spirit. Had the crowd standing on the seats shouting for more. Got to shake hands w/Ray & Dave.
Been asking this question for 20 years. If God threw a concert who would he have open for the Kinks? The Beatles or the Stones? And by God I’m referring to Neil Young.

The audience sang along with almost every song. Great concert.
Lucky enough to have seen them twice

I'm partial to The Cat Empire.

For me the perfect band was The Pogues. But that's just me and I don't expect anyone to come with me on that trip
The Pixies
I'm dedicating this one to MGT ;)

Felt bad for Spirit.
