I’ve just seen a rabbit rescue say that because Easter is coming up they are already getting enquiries from parents wanting to buy rabbits as Easter presents. When told that they are an 8 plus year commitment and need a lot of space they were hung up on. Absolutely boils my piss

Might get new ones if we ever have a place that's big enough to give them the freedom they deserve.
What makes me angrier is that of the folks who don't hang up, many will feed those rabbits nothing but carrots (the root part). Utterly wrecking the poor rabbits' digestive tracts in the process.
Few torn up couches later, and everyone's local SPCA was flooded with Dalmatians.
They're living things. Not goddamned novelty toys.
... ugh, think I need to go lay down. 🤕
Recent suggested law changing the smallest space to keep a rabbit in was 10m². Which I found pretty unrealistic and I think there will be some heavy revisions, but it still says something about average rabbit welfare
Pets are living breathing creatures, not *things* to be surprise gifted to someone.
Admittedly I adopted a puppy for my birthday from my local humane society, but I considered the decision myself and I loved my pup until the day she died of old age years and years later. I never wanted to let her go.
It is one of the best decisions that could be made regarding the safety and wellfare of these little fellas.
So many people own pets who absolutely should not. Not even because they’re malicious. For example people who baby their dogs and don’t train them leading to the development of territorial and aggressive behaviour
No this animal is not as big as a dog or runs around as much or is as destructive when miserable, but its life, its happiness, its traumas etc matter just as much.
Well it could be good that they hang up. If they realized it was a bad idea and just quit, great. If they went for a less scrupulous supplier, bad.
The one I get looks for is when I tell someone a betta really does live a much better life in a 10 gallon tank instead of that little cup...
It is sad and disturbing
The idea of giving young children live animals with zero research or backup plan is wild to me.
If you don't protect your wires the bunny will nom the spicy hay.
Seriously though, you can put up cheap baseboards in whatever room(s) the rabbit will roam in, secure plastic tubing around any cables, and making sure they have tons of other enrichment to distract them.
The cage is only there for when I am at work, and even there I made sure to connect two, to give him as much space as possible.
Boils my blood that so many people treat rabbits like this when they're more like dogs or cats in how much space/exercise/play they require. Seen it SO much with birds as well--they ARE NOT toys or plants 😡😡😡
One day we came outside to see the hutch was open and the rabbits were gone. My parents said a dog broke into it and got em. 18 years later, I found out they sold em.
Haha, im a mess now.
Stop impulse buying them, my god.
also im glad that at some animal shelters they will be closed for any bunny adoptions on Easter and i THINK black cats for halloween?
Not just are rabbits bad for kids bc they hate being held and can even be injured by being grabbed to hard, they are also very destructive (love gnawing at everything in reach) and smart, even able to learn to open cage locks
"WE DO NOT SELL EASTER BUNNIES. WE DO NOT SELL MEAT RABBITS. WE DO NOT SELL RABBITS TO BREED FOR MEAT OR FOR SALE AS EASTER BUNNIES."
It also makes me angry when people release them. They aren't wild animals. They're domesticated. Their brains are smoother than their wild cousins.
Which leads me to the next thing! They can introduce disease and viruses to the wild population!
Who is even trying so hard for Easter that they even think of getting a live animal especially??
my apartment neighbor got his girlfriend a farm raised rabbit, i found the poor thing hidding in the bushes nearby because she thought "oh i thought you could just let them stay outside like a cat."
Same with puppies right before Christmas.
One bunny literally went insane and died shortly afterwards.
