white dude colleagues in post production here in LA have told me they've been passed over for jobs because the productions said they want to hire more women. Always seemed to me like the production just didn't want to hire that person and were using DEI as a way of letting them down 'easy.'

I think it's something the left has a serious blindspot regarding. Ultimately the white American worker & small business owner (in this case, regardless of race/gender) is very very quick to throw their ire at the groups they perceive as inferior.

I think the left has a tendency to gloss over how workers will choose racism and handwave away racial concerns. You see this a lot with the "Actually, the white working class abandoned Dems because of NAFTA" when the story is far more complicated.

Yeah it's a tricky dynamic.
At my old factory (I work as an industrial chemist) I had two separate Hispanic plant managers who were MAGA or MAGA-lite. The latter guy ended up leaving because he thought the job was forcing him to be too cruel to the workers. Complicated stuff.

As much as we talk about solidarity it's absolutely true there are some blue collar unions cooking the books and dependent on intergenerational jobs. The left should be comfortable calling on unions to snuff this out and become more equitable (and, more importantly, sectoral).
