They could just sit on their pile of money and take a few years off and come back with X-Men vs The Avengers in 2028.

The problem is it was safe way to turn a buck. Studios invested less in the broad artistry of movies, with its high variability in hits and misses, and more in the 'safe buck' of the familiar. Overall, comic book/superhero movies have been bad for our (inter)national culture.
