Mitch had 2 chances to convict Trump after the House impeached him twice, and he refused to do it. Had he done so, you are right, we would not be in this horrible mess, now. And Trump would be in Federal prison for trying to instigate a coup in 2021.

He only voted no because he doesn't have to worry about running for reelection. He knew his no vote didn't matter and wouldn't affect the outcome anyway. Those are the only reasons for his vote. This country is burning to the ground because of his failure to act in 2016 when it actually mattered.
