I was very moved by your story and your strength in stating it. I was lucky not to have suffered such abuse in my childhood and can only guess how it feels to live with the affects. I hope that sharing it has reaffirmed your resilience and helping others affected will not be too traumatic for you.

I'm very much trying to be an advocate for those who as yet, haven't found the strength to speak out and I feel the more I can share my story, the more I can normalise and diminish the shame and fear that survivors feel. The dreaded silence and secrets need to be no more.

I have not to my knowledge ever been told of abuse but have now read the advice to people receiving such advice: thanking them, not questioning them, believing them etc: it’s obvious stuff really but needs to be reiterated. Thank you for what you do.

Hi Jude, thanks the follow. Shame is a weird one, in a counselling session a month back I was talking about this and whether my sense of it had changed. I even had to Google the meaning, which made me realise that, yes in some sense I don't hate myself, but regret plenty. No more self punishments.🫂

Thank you. It's strange how the worthiness image has always been a tough one to accept. My natural response in life to someone offering love has typically been met with a shrugged shoulder... Though I'm working hard at this to accept it for what it genuinely is. 🤝

It is always both terrifying and relieving to start telling your story (once you're in a safe place to do so – and it sounds like you've got a fabulous support team).

I’ve honestly found telling strangers to be easier than telling people who’ve known me and/or my abusers – strangers are generally less likely to react in disbelief (probably because they have nothing invested in either relationship), which can be ridiculously triggering.
