Man, I wish there were a bookmark function!
Kindle compatible?
If you download in epub format you can email to your kindle or use the calibre software on your computer
Cool! Thank you!
πŸ“Œ
You may only keep a downloaded book for the loan period (14-30 days), but your #PublicLibrary provides free downloads of ebooks to your digital device (phone, laptop, etc.) You just need a library card. πŸ‘πŸ˜€
πŸ“Œ
ooh pinned
Don’t let the dictator see the list! Libraries already won’t last long and information will be limited to lies on the internet soon..no more silly education!

@kittifantastic.bsky.social
Thank you!
I'm happy to pay for ebooks. Is there a non-Amazon option that has a comparably wide selection?
A lot of indie authors sell them direct on their websites as well. Including yours truly, but that’s neither here nor there.
Bookshop . Org has ebooks now, I believe
πŸ“Œ
Thank you!
Omg I was just looking for something to read, you saved my week
πŸ“Œ
Much appreciated
All of your comments make my heart soar, just knowing there are so many great readers out there!!
πŸ’™πŸ˜˜xo
What about all the great writers that won't get a cent for the work they did. Without the writers, you would have no books to enjoy reading.
Project Gutenberg is all public domain.

IRC server "InternetHighway", channel "ebooks"
πŸ“Œ
10000 thanks.
There’s also Inkitt & Royal Road which have thousands of free indie-made stories. Lifetimes worth of reading material
I'm gonna go ahead and copy that list!! Hat tip to you!
(Types own name into the search bar...)
LOL, same.
Do the authors get paid?
These are all in the public domain.
Many thanks for this!!!!!!! πŸ™‚
If you're using free websites to fight Amazon while ignoring the rights of the authors to earn a living, you are doing it wrong. I'd suggest Barnes and noble?
Well said.
Or Kobo.
Are these sites pirating books or is there some compensation for authors?
But any percentage of free is zero!
But they aren’t actually free.
Oh, then the OP is wrong? I looked at exactly one, and it was free!
I saw some, very few, that are free but laced with many more you pay for. Site called Freebooks. Go figure
Library works for me.
Dunno, I don't use them, but I would want to know before using one or more of them.

21. Annas Archive
You listed librivox twice.
Thank you, it's been pointed out. Too bad we can't edit our posts, or I would've.
My bad. I might have known there'd be others.
No worries 😁
Thank you!!!
This is wonderful. Thank you.
πŸ“Œ
Anna’s archive is also top tier. it contains IA, libgen etc.
Ya got Librivox twice.
Oops! Thanks. I wish we could edit our posts here, plus have 1k character limit.
πŸ“Œ
Librivox is how I listened to classic literature on my iPod way back in the day
πŸ“Œ
Yeah but Internet Archive is like a library, you can only borrow them temporarily and if someone got to it first, you have to wait until they're done with it. There's a time limit.
πŸ“Œ
This is so interesting!
πŸ“Œ
Are these apps? Or websites?
Websites

I use Hoppla and cloud library apps, neither have.

Or you can go to the library and not steal from authors.
There are many folks who cannot afford to purchase books whenever they like. πŸ˜‰
Yes. Like me. That’s why I go to the FREE library.
These books are in the public domain...
πŸ“Œ
Don’t forget your local library. Get a card and then download Libby. You can download books through your library card.

Also, download Hoopla. You can download books, music, and movies.

Also, libraries loan out more than books. Mine has seeds, museum passes, a maker space, and much more.
Kanopy is the video equivalent of Libby, for movies and tv shows
Thank you, forgot that site.
Libraries pay for the items you can borrow so authors still get paid even for borrowing ebooks.
If you can, become a friend of your local library. I pay $25/year at mine. Considering how many local governments are reducing library budgets, they need the public to help.

Also, donate your used books to them. Ours has books sales throughout the year to help defray costs.

Volunteer if you can.
Also Libby and Hoopla allow you to read and listen to music, Books, movies. Great apps and your local library gets credit.
Yes I cancelled my kindle unlimited subscription and now send that to my public library.
πŸ₯°
I just downloaded Libby and discovered audio books (I’ve known they exist, I’ve just never utilised them)! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»
Thank you for the audio book reminder. Forgot to mention that. πŸ™
Check out Hoopla, too
Books, movies, music...

Libby - Recommended for Library Books. Good for Periodicals too!

LOVE Libby πŸ₯°
Since I got rid of kindle unlimited, my first step (if I can't afford a book), is to request it from my library app.
I use my Kindle as a book mark 🀣
11. Project Gutenberg 😷
Thank you.
great resource. Thank you for sharing
And LibGen. Remember to use some anti-virus/malware when you use these.

I’ll echo what somebody said: go to and support libraries too.
πŸ“Œ
And the public library! Why do people forget this?
Unfortunately, many folks don't have close access to a library.
That’s a bummer. If there’s internet, ebooks are an option. And free.
Thanks for the list. Btw- numbers 4 and 19 are the same- Librivox/LibriVox.
Don't forget your library card and your local library
Excellent. Thank you
Thanks
The reality is, most authors barely eke out an income from their book royalties. If you really want a free read, either apply to be an advance reader, or go with the library. Authors labor over every book, often spending quite a bit of money on marketing, and we deserve every penny we get. πŸ™‚
I only download β€œfree” books from dead authors.

The grey area for me is when I already own physical copies and want a digital version to take to the beach or something - often resellers are selling ebooks for significant fractions of physical media prices.
True! And needing the occasional ebook is TOTALLY understandable! πŸ™‚
Seconded.
As far as I know (ie, of the items on this list I’m familiar with) these are all legal sites. Meaning they’re all public domain or otherwise free to read works.

I have a book listed for free on smashwords. I don’t recommend anyone read it, but that’s a whole different thing πŸ˜‚
Thank you.
Thank you!!!!
πŸ“Œ
Thanks so much. I love ebooks. This will help me delete my Kindle app.
Lol... I use mine as a book mark.
Thank you ;)
Libby
At https://blotterrag.com you may see and read our complete archive back to 2003. Just in case you need something shorter than a novel.
Wow... thank you!
https://www.hathitrust.org/ out of print repository of millions of scanned books.
Love this... thank you.
Why are you trying to starve authors?
I probably buy more books than almost anyone I know.
Don't get excited ... these are places where people can find banned books!
Thank you!
A bookmark feature would be Very cool.

@bsky.app
Project Gutenberg has been posting here books now available in public domain. πŸ€“ I read books on Kindle because of space issues, so bookbub is a go to. I'll be checking out the others tho. Thanks for the listπŸ’ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²β˜•πŸ€“
Thank you!

Time to get away from Amazon!
