I think people just end up floating on the wrong side of the internet and/or not actively looking for them. One of my favorite games released this year (Ark's Wonder Dungeon) was an RPG maker game and in general there's a few others popping off.

i teach very young kids to make games, and because we use rpgmaker as an entry level tool rpgmaker games themselves also double as a nice tool to unlock their brains to just how wild, different and creative games can truly be. it helps lower their shoulders and boosts their sense of creativity
