Yeah, I remember reading in Cajori that groupings were usually expressed in words before we started using brackets for that.
You donβt need a word for something until you keep having to talk about it.
I only realised it was 'a thing' in the last few years (despite having done a module on it at uni). It has absolutely captivated me.
