This is all true, but you forget to include the extra weight and real damage that is causing to road surfaces. Everybody is going on about potholes but few people are saying that we are getting them because our road surfaces and substrate simply can't support the extra weight SUVs add.

Certaintly getting heavier and that definitely contributes to road wear (especially road danger). However, I would guess the immense increase in volume of light commercial vehicles is bigger contributor here and hardly £ contributing. Another example of there being no such thing as 'free' delivery.

The weight of commercial vehicles might cause road surface damage, but it's consumer vehicles that are damaging pavements by parking and driving on them.

In Yorkshire we've 4-foot-long gritstone kerbs, intact since the 1900s & surviving the cobbles under tarmac, now cracked and displaced by SUVs.

I know it's an extreme example, but this car park now angers drivers because spaces are "too small for modern cars", rather than "modern cars are being made too large for common car parks" (and of course much else)...

This book contains an excellent introduction to the subject of motoring externalities. It mentions that heavier and faster vehicles cause more non-exhaust emissions, but more braking and acceleration on under-inflated tyres causes them to rise exponentially.

My favourite SUV fact is that a lot of the more common newer ones are less than 50cm thinner than a Solo bus with 30 seats! Range Rovers come in at 2209mm (13cm!) and others such as Kia EV9 (1980mm) are only 2 metres shorter and 36cm thinner - a school ruler thinner
