You also used to be able to easily remove batteries from laptops (well maybe not macbooks but PCs for sure) I used to walk around with a spare charged battery for long writing sessions.

I still have chargers for Samsung batteries because the charging port was always the first thing to break but it was easy to remove the batteries. And I replaced the batteries long before I needed a new phone.
My husband just put in a new battery for our daughter's laptop last week. It was not easy, but he was determined that a bum battery wasn't going to mean a new laptop. PC, not Mac.
My laptop battery configuration was so convoluted that even after several good YouTube videos & a real concerted effort to replace it myself, I ponied up the $$$ for a professional & they charged their max quoted price it was that big a PIA to replace.
At the time, I had access to repair parts. So swapped half of the keys on my white MacBook with those from the black model so I had a chessboard style keyboard.

I have since realised, I was not.
