We have eagles now! I'm in Bergen County, NJ, right by the Meadowlands and we have friggin' eagles and egrets and all types of hawks at levels we did not have when I was a child in the 80s. Our kids today get to see these flying beauties because of the EPA.
The first time I went to Pittsburgh the old timers would tell me that in the old days nobody wore a white shirt to work because it would be gray by noon from the air pollution
The other thing is the EPA was created under Nixon to bipartisan support. Turns out a century of rivers on fire and black boogers made people want some changes.
First time I went to an industrial city was Pittsburgh 1967. I remember staring at a huge orange neon sign atop adowntown building. An hour later I was astounded to see it had risen higher in the sky.
I lived both inside and just outside Pittsburgh for 43 years.
When we opened walls for repair, you could still see they were black as soot inside where people weren’t able to clean up or paint over them but air could still get in.
I guess it would the snow around the steel plants in Baltimore and Pittsburgh was pinkish when it wasn’t grey. Probably from iron in the air pollution.
Took a grade school field trip to Cahokia Mounds IL in the early 1970s. Looked back towards St Louis from on top a mound and saw what looked like a brown dome over the city. I never, ever want to see something like that again.
my uncle has described walking to school in Los Angeles in the early 70s and how he'd be coughing up phlegm the whole way there. how you could see the haze on the horizon

I'm OK with that. It's Cope City and I'm the mayor.
