I'm jealous of people who can't hear very well. I at least can identify scents if they're strong enough, probably better than people with sensitive noses who pick up other things when smelling.
I have this problem. There's a specific brand of frozen pizza my kids aren't allowed to make because of the smell only I can smell. Have you tried the nursing nose odor sticks? They help me a little.
I have these: https://a.co/d/fLREPqL It's like chapstick for your nostrils, kinda. It's helped me when the gym is very gymmy, etc. They're mild. There's also a straight odor blocker type I haven't tried yet.
I feel for you. I had the same issue when I was younger. The good news is that I no longer have that. If you are under stress, try b-complex vitamins, reduce refined sugars in your diet, or see a well-regarded acupuncturist. Hope you find some relief soon. 💜
Imagine you need to wash your car rug because you stepped in gasoline at the gas station and you didn't realize before getting into the car and putting your foot on said rug and now the smell is haunting you
Right, that is what I mean. I wouldn't be able to tell, and I am aware of the hazard(s) that lack of smell may present. So I would have a highly flammable car rug that could burs into flame in hot summer sun, a spark, what have you.
Or I wouldn't smell a propane stove, etc, and house goes kaboom.
I don't think my rug is flammable just annoying to me. Regarding kerosene they make explosive gas detectors. I got one after I learned my dad can't smell the additive in natural gas anymore (we got one for him too)... after I smelled a gas leak. I got one in case it leaks while I'm sleeping
I did not know that. Thank you. I'll have to look into those explosive gas detectors, since my biological detector got busted.
I hope you may find a way to get the smell out. That sounds unpleasant.
They aren't cheap but they aren't wholly unreasonable?
My parents had a slow leak and if I hadn't swung by for a visit it could have ended really badly so they have one on every floor now. I just have one next to the kitchen
My aunt lost her sense of smell and what bothered her most afterwards was eating oranges. She said it was like eating damp tissues wrapped around clusters of water-filled blisters.
I held my nose, tried not to breathe in and ate a segment and damn if she doesn’t have a case.
The one and only time my mom had to call poison control for me was cause I *drank* perfume intentionally. I thought since it smelled good it must taste good. That and vanilla extract disabused me of that idea
Lavender ruins my day. When I was a 2 or 3 yo kid in the seat on the shopping cart, my mom stopped to talk to someone she knew at the supermarket. But it was in front of the imported cheese section. I had a meltdown after one minute from the stinky cheese smell it was so awful.
Since I had Covid the first or second time, every now and then, I go on a brief olfactory respite from my hyperosmia.
Then it rushes back all at once and I feel as if I was dropped in-between a dept. store fragrance counter and pet food aisle. Overload! But I’ll still take it!
My heightened sense of smell is a form of hyper-vigilance from anxiety and also from working as a cook for almost 20 yrs. Once I figured that out, it helped me put the smells in their place. Not sure if that makes sense for you but if it does, maybe it can take the edge off!
I have deviated my septum in 2 places and apparently needed a turboplasty and rhinoplasty at the same time to restructure it all. I was so excited to smell what I was tasting and then realized I have a strong sense of smell now :( lol
When I traveled to hot countries they taught me to use Vic’s inhalers in my nose. Makes one nose blind for a while. They are called Yadom in Thai and can be purchased in many different scents to help you become nose blind for long enough to get through.
As someone who lost their sense of smell as a kid it has its pros & cons. Sure taking out the trash and other grunt work is easier now but not being able to smell candles or flowers sucks Not to mention I stress about my hygeine constantly because I never know if I smell bad unless a friend tells me
Understandable, but i am genuinely jealous in reverse. People who have a strong sense of smell can enjoy different subtle flavors in food much better. I'm a bit limited, and end up with just enjoying spicy and salty

I structure what and how i cook around trash removal. Sometimes I throw out the trash every day. It's *why* i compost
