Shit *I* almost joined. I really liked Top Gun. The only reason I didn't do air force ROTC was they told me my vision was too bad to ever fly anything. And they said Navy had even stricter requirements.

It was before lasik so idk if things have changed. The navy involves landing planes on boats so hence the stricter rules

I used to be an optician/optometric assistant and you couldn't be a pilot post-Lasik because the integrity of your cornea was compromised and they didn't want to deal with the effects of air pressure and speed on a compromised cornea. They're really strict about eye health and vision actually.

I grew up in an Air Force town and wanted to join. My father talked me out of it, but a lot of my friends (male and female) did join and had good experiences. But that was the Air Force. Army's a whole other thing.

Was a big big eye-opener for me in the mid-70s, as a young Navy ROTC, to note that everyone on my ship was either a country boy from Tennessee or a Black guy from a city. That’s what the volunteer military does - makes it an economic draft.

Has anyone else noticed a shift in the messaging for recruitment ads? I feel like they used to be about targeting individuals, "YOU should join the army and be a soldier!" But within the last few months they have changed to target parents, "Have you talked to your child about joining the army?"
