It’s absurd but it’s just not an issue that polls well with the public yet. Immigration is one of the few places where Trump it’s actually above water in polling. Need to move the needle to be able to leverage it and that’s probably not going to happen without something really eye catching.

I get it. People should be outraged and terrified. But he’s got 53% on immigration right now. The El Salvador thing specifically is less popular but it’s a level of nuance that’s not breaking through fully yet. Highlighting sympathetic stories is helping but we’re not there yet.

I’m saying there’s currently no popular support, which equates to political power in a democracy, to push back on immigration policy currently. There’s a ton of popular support to push back on Musk/DOGE and other policies. So he’s doing that until support shifts on immigration. Which is smart.

His job is to govern. His constituents strongly support a change in immigration policy but they’re not sufficient on their own to change immigration policy. Until other constituencies shift, he can’t do much on that and those other constituencies are liking what they see right now.
