The appeal time limit tries to mandate the tribunal to fully process appeals of people on asylum support within 24 weeks, unless it’s not “reasonably practical” to do so. Lots of questions to be asked about how it will work, given appeals are taking around 50 weeks at the moment.

Huge access to justice concerns raised as well. The shortage of legal reps is well known, and there’s no quick fix for that. Home Office should also be working out how it can reduce the pressure on the tribunal by improving its own decision making.

This is the main point we’ve all been banging on about. If the Home Office simply made better decisions in the first instance, we wouldn’t be in such a mess with the appeals backlog. This timeframe tweaking treats the symptoms whilst totally ignoring the causes.

50 weeks is only those that went in early in the current 'bump' in appeals. Waiting times for those going into appeal system now would be far, far longer unless something changes that in the meantime, I'd guess.
