1,700 members of the RS signed an open letter demanding Musk be kicked out, but the shadowy ones who run the organisation want a big fat legacy donation and aren't budging.
That is how England has always been run. It's all about the money - it's plain and clear even in Jane Austen's novels.
I imagine Elon is not even in the top 10 of people who should be expelled from the Royal Society. It’s like trying to banish someone from the House of Lords for being a drunken idiot. Are you going to ban all anthropomorphic clown shows from the House of Lords? It’s a slippery slope.
Probably true but maybe, rather than being cowardly, RS leadership like what Elon is doing? Also, the cowardice is catching. Why are the members who petitioned for his exclusion not making a show of burning their RS certificates (or whatever other silly thing you get when you become a fellow)?
for what it's worth, I was at the meeeting and spoke (pretty much last) and objected to "appeasement". but it isn't clear the RS has actually made a decision. what they are doing is running a process which the letter to musk is the first actual step. so the guardian report is incorrect.
Why does everyone cower in fear of this clique of nerdy fascist jackasses? Law firms, universities, esteemed academies, etc seem way too eager to roll over.
2 main reasons (often it's a mix of both):
-The leadership is spineless and terrified of any sort of controversy that could lead to rich/powerful people retaliating against them.
-The leadership is made up of people who support fascists but aren't ready to go fully mask off.
"Some have also argued revoking Musk’s fellowship could undermine trust in science." My trust in science took a blow upon just now finding out he's been made a member for his contributions in investing in technological sectors.
More harm than good? What harm? Isn't the harm of your societies own rules being ignored for clear political reasons and or spineless fear way more harm?
This cowardly action will do more damage than not acting. I expect backlash as this will be a permanent stain on their reputation.
You don't run scared or tolerate nazi-saluting, neo-Nazi endorsing, anti-science, far right conspiracy peddling scumbags because they might tweet mean things about you.
He should be removed for academic fraud, not for his political beliefs. For consistently lying about his credentials. The Royal Society is complicit in platforming him as an intellectual, and should try to lessen the damage by removing him now.

That’ll bring him into line!

He’s an investor who got lucky with his daddy’s apartheid money.
