Idk I have actually had to explain this to someone before because my dad is a nurse anesthetist so I’ve known what it all means my entire life. Someone I met irl IN COLLEGE really did genuinely think this, so it’s believable.

Similar - I read the James Herriot books as a child and thought the 'local anaesthetic' the vets used was the author's code for local beer given to the animals to help them feel no pain... Was embarassingly old before I realised this assumption was not correct.
