If office-bound professionals are being dumped out of the system, think of all the people who have already been immiserated or at least pushed into precarity. Tens of thousands of jobs. A measurable downwards pressure on the economy that also wrecks a key tool of economic growth.

What most politicians fail to understand is that any large project cannot usually be started on the whim of people for whom staying in post for up to five years is a long period of time.

An exception is if the plans and legal stuff are nearly ready to go, which is what the road lobby are good at.
