The reason we have universities is they're a place for people who actually know stuff - unlike the people who appear on your TV screens pretending to know things.

Ideally, yes, that would be a good reason. In certain universities, however, the people who know stuff have tended to be the ones to get sidelined and/or ousted. There’s nowt so threatening to the epistemically insecure as a well-read specialist.
