hmm... question for people!
I've been mulling this over, but does anyone ever have a weird feeling about doing similar concepts as other artists?
I do understand nothing's truly "original" besides your own spin on something, but it's a hurdle I can't seem to overcome. I fret over being a copycat

“Creativity is selective copying.”
i think you hugely limit yourself by trying to be wholly original, it limits your authenticity. you might just be similar to someone, or enjoy the same art they do.
99% chance I cannot match their skill level and it'll make me look cocky for thinking I could ever try
(Which is why I like asking ideas from people who don't do art)
It'll still look bad but at least I won't feel as bad about it
Unless I'm halfway I'll always try think of something else
1/2
Art to me is just solving problems like that. Eventually with everything you take in you'll figure out your own way to solve those problems.
But I think it's worse to see your sketches or the final result of a drawing and think "damn, this has no soul!"

Usually inspiration is just key moments taken from things you like. Yeah someone else might share those intersections with you, but there’s a larger web of key moments not shared + the lens of the artist themselves
I never want anything to think I'm copying them for whatever reason.
I think the idea of "great minds think alike" should apply, but sometimes I also overthink how someone might react lol.
Just draw what you love and what inspires you. It's hard enough to obtain the motivation, so take what you can get.
I'm in an awkward state when I'm learning to enjoy making art again, so I'm gonna try to reapproach it with a little more vigor
1-Seeing something amazing done by another artist
2-wishing to try something similar
3-refrain to do it, fearing to being see as a fraud
1. Have a fun/brilliant idea.
2. Get excited (buy supplies).
3. Start thinking about all of the sites where art is made and sold
4. Decide it’s probably been done already.
4. Get anxious/angry about art theft and AI.
5. Get depressed-start rewatching a TV show I’ve already seen a dozen times.
"This food is offered by its artists to the next following segment which will be stretching out its hand tomorrow." - Kandinsky
Do not be shy gaining perspective based on what's come before you.
The concepts are universal bc that's nature, but your individual experience, voice and style will take it somewhere new.
If you approach it as a constant and unavoidable rule of creativity, it doesn't weigh as heavy.
I feel like it stems from many people having negative feelings towards using references or using inspo from another artist but the greatest artists always use references :)) don’t worry too much about it <3
How closely are you following their theme/look/concept?
Are you doing this in a way that might drive business towards or away from the artist?
What about it appeals to you creatively? Is there a unique spin you can put on that core concept?
"Imitation is the highest for of flattery " is a good concept.
Secondly, how do you think they got where they are at?
Trying new things to you is great!
You might build upon them
The best part is that by trying things other have been through, they might give you tips to master them sooner than it took them to do it.
If you feel its fun, do it, dont hesitate!
Whole stories.
Characters
Powers
As soon as I open my mouth about an idea I see it everywhere then it makes me want to scrap the whole thing.
Weird part? The things I'm silent on, I still haven't seen 🤷🏾♂️
There is nothing wrong with emulating what you like. Just don't forget to put yourself into it.
Just don’t send it to the client before you’ve checked. It’s more likely they won’t know until they’ve approved it and someone tells them.
It's like not wanting to have the same favorite colour as everyone else in your class.
Really, it doesn't matter if "they" think you copied someone.
What matters is if you DID copy someone. If it comes from the heart, it's all good.
I do directed painting, not originals, and I’m transparent that I’ve learned from @keepitcolourful.bsky.social Jesse Robertson or other instructors.
I think that as long as the piece is still reflecting what you feel is important, then it is unique in that regard.
I'm really too pre-occupied about trying to get better that being original doesn't really cross my mind much.
Practice: Never feel bad
Minor project: Is it the central or accessory, maybe try and draw inspo use it to brainstorm but not copy
Brand/sell: I use cosplay rules 60% me, 80% modified, 20% can be directly inspired by (w/ credit)
Concepts are just concepts. The details are what makes it yours.
Having become friends with the artists I admire? 1/
We often created them in wildly diffrent ways! Sometimes we could adapt what we learned from each other to make it better but sometimes we stuck with what we did. 2/
Guess what? That feels really good to hear as an artist.
Like, I love The White Stripes. Their style and writing format inspires the hell out of me - I don't think I sound a lick like them at all.
i really don't get why it's an issue. unless you're literally attempting to plagiarize someone's entire thing
we will get inspired by things, see things we like, and distill what we enjoy in them. there's no way not to.
you're the sum of experiences in your life. your art is the choices you make
Having 2 ideas just far enough apart, ensures each of them proves the other's originality
Ponies cant be batman, batman cant be a pony
The "dirtiness" is the surrounding thought that it can be viewed outside your intention. That inspiration will instead be seen as plagiarism, and the ease in which to do so.
Humanize the situation so its obvious what it's intention is, not some vague theft, but another angle
The only time I’ve ever felt a little weird about copying anyone was when I was in spaces where people could take ideas and gatekeep them and BOY that was boring.
I think having similar ideas is cool because then you have something to bond with another artist over!! As long as they aren’t mean over it
As an artist, as long as you give credit to the art and artist that inspired yours, you're good!
Art in and of itself is imitation. It's okay to be inspired by other works!
I usually have no interest if someone lacks their own personality in their work and takes someone elses
I always look forward to something where your skill and artistry goes wild
Let me see you, unmistakably, in the things you create
I am not fond of art from those who wear someone elses voice or have no voice of their own
It helps you look at things differently, identify WHY the concept works, where it came from, re-evaluates the way you first saw it as well!
Yes, nothing is truly original, but that does not mean that you can not be original. This is amazing video. I hope it helps. Please share!

Ce n'est pas grave si on n'est pas "original".
