cities with good public transport systems connected with rail take a lot of cars off the road, which is great for everyone except capitalists who own car companies, so it's a worthwhile business expense for them to try to stop it from happening

And of course the expense is not actually the tunnel digging, which is a red herring, it's basically just the press release. The goal isn't to build, it's to prevent something else from being built. Same for unrealistic renders of autonomous mini-busses and the like.

The point of the car tunnel is to get government officials to say, "it would be a waste of money to build a subway now when that much cooler technology is on the horizon". Neither Musk nor even the government officials actually need to believe the technology is real for that.

If I can recall correctly, the tunnel was about stealing bids from the community in alternate use transportation projects. If they can squirrel them away into pointless projects, the real alternatives won't see the light of day.

The last time I was at the main convention center in Las Vegas (where two of the $53 million Hyperloop's whopping THREE stops are), they had put out signage that tried to confuse ride share users (many with rides coming) and siphon them to the Hyperloop, which costs fifteen dollars and goes nowhere.
