In the absence of a devolved English parliament, the term English has no real legal meaning, as opposed to British which is the nationality. There's a high chance that someone identifying as 'English' is simply a racist.

Disagree. Sometimes racist, yes, but 'a high chance'? Nah. It's all about context. slipperiness of identity is of course reinforced by the lack of legal status. But the strongest sense of English identity is sports related & your doing a disservice here to Gareth Southgate's team
Ha - I was thinking that you are the person who would disagree! You and Billy Bragg. The context is Braverman’s dreadful Telegraph article. Yes, it’s different in a sports context. Outside that I don’t really see why someone would use it when they could define as British or by their region.
