I'm old enough to remember learning the term "metrosexual" and thinking to myself, "That's just dressing like an adult in any developed nation."
Of all culture clashes I experienced during my assimilation, the idea that caring about one's wardrobe is a gendered interest was among the most jarring

However, they were pretty cool about it because they knew we kept the necessary electronic shit running and we weren't snitches.
Of course, as South Park taught us, liking girls is gay.
And when I said "you should basically just shower more and especially your hair and ditch the baseball caps" they always reacted like they thought I was trying to trick them or something.
Dude, literally just shower, dress like you care about yourself, and treat them like human beings. It's not hard. (They seem to *really* struggle with that last one)

When I'd say stuff like "you know so-and-so (who was less popular) is really nice and I think you'd be her type" they would, again, act like I was trying to trick them.
Which is why Americans are still struggling with the concept 30 yrs later
