This is literally always my biggest fear when writing smut. I love building an atmosphere and a story before I get down to writing the actual smut part, but I often get scared it's not what people want and I leave them bored
i actually love this kind of thing personally, and if i REALLY donβt wanna read it, i can always skip it and skim until i get to the actual sex act! itβs better to have it than not imo, even if itβs just a little (a lot is good too)
There's no point in writing smut if all you do is describe the sex act. Frankly, it's not that interesting on its own. There are only so many ways bits can be rubbed together. The context is like seasoning. Without it, the entire dish is flat and tasteless.
Lol, I can so relate! π Porn without plot isn't all that hot for me. I need to _know_ who these characters are and why one is screwing the other guy's brains out~ π But as a result, even my short stories end up being in the 100 page mark π¬
As someone who writes smut professionally, yes, 100% this!
At this point I just let people know, "This is the word count your paying for, if it goes over that because I spent to much time establishing the characters and relationships and putting in banter, that stuff is free."
Oh π would you mind sharing more? What sort of clients do you have and what do they want? Do you have a lot of work? How do you find more?
I can't write in English but maybe I can do something similar in my country!
I work in the 'transformation kink' space, I got my start doing first free, then paid writing for TF games and eventually moved onto being a general freelance writer based primary out of Furaffinity, but also doing allot of writing for games, comics, est. within the TF space.
Find something you can do/enjoy that isn't already overdone and then work your butt off, grab opportunities, MAKE opportunities by reaching out to people clearly in need, make yourself recognizable as an artist AND a hard worker.
And be ready for it to be allot of hard work for minimal reward. 2/2
It is NOT an easy or fast road to success and you will never really see the same accolades as your artist friends, but you can carve out a space for yourself and make a living writing, which is honestly so worth it if your the kind of person who just loves to write!
A lot of hard work for little reward is standard issue for authors heh :'D i was expecting no less!
So basically you're a fandom writer offering commissions of writing? :o I had a sense that might exist but you're the first I meet!
Like a lot of writing jobs, it probably only works for...
I actually got a complaint on my first draft that there wasn't enough fluff, so I rewrote and made it 10x longer. The struggle is with inserting my personal canon information without it feeling like a tutorial level or a wall of text.
Basically me, and my writing is better for it. Even the flash fics benefit from an understanding of the characters and why they're fucking. If all I did was describe sex I'd have nothing left to write; it's all been done by now. It's the fluff and feelings that make it engaging and unique.
Also, what I like about writing erotica is exploring eroticism and its surrounding emotions and experiences. That necessarily requires that I have at least an idea of the themes I want to touch on. Little Black Spellbook is tentacle smut, but it's also about being vulnerable in intimate moments.
this is me! π as a reader, i enjoy my smut if there is a good chunk of emotional connection going in between my ship, that's the seasoning! the salt to my food!
As a mostly reader, a summary of how they got to fucking is good. Not just BC it's good but BC it means you don't have to write a summary after and I can read it and go Ohohoho hell yeah
how am I supposed to know what they are doing in bed if I don't know why they're there, why they're there with each other, what they want, and how self-aware they are about what they want. And don't even get me started if they've met before (in any context)
As an avid reader of smut, I do indeed appreciate when there's significant effort into the reasons why they're trying to break each other's hips.
I love you wonderful authors.
You make my days full of joy when I know it's a loving, kind, and caring relationship behind the 4-person bedroom tango. πΉππ
Not me sitting here proofreading my post after I posted it because I realized I replied to a creatives thread with thousands of peoples' (oh god is that how you possessively pluralize "people"β½β½) eyeballs on it.
I feel personally attacked by this thing. Also, even if you have them fucking in the first chapter already, it doesn't mean it won't need at least 4,5 k words per chapter to slip story in for... reasons!
Aye it's me getting an oc x canon commission, cause I can't just get a normal pic of two people fucking. Nope there's gotta be lore and everything. This is a curse and blessing.
I would like to go out and say I don't like stories that are just straight smut. I need story. That's why I liked 4th wing, the first scene was nearly 2/3rds into the book after the characters are well developed
Look, I NEED lore desperately. I just do. Don't ask why the fic is already 50k words as a thinly veiled pretext for what the characters will be doing in bed.

I REFUSE TO BELIEVE OTHERWISE

"How did we get here?" moaned Galadriel as the greatest of the fallen Maia thrust his cock into her.
"Surely you remember," boomed Sauron, "but if your mind is so weak as to forget, I shall refresh it as I ravage your body..."
