Today is the birthdate of Samuel J. Tilden, who lost the U.S. presidency despite winning the popular vote in 1876, when his own party threw his opponent electoral votes in a backroom deal. On his deathbed, Tilden, who would be 211 had he lived, was philosophical: "Fucking blow me. I won that shit."
