Oh my grandfather taught me that one- you take the train back from Canada, and tie a string around the neck of your bottle of booze, then hang it out the window when you cross the border. It was a right of passage for kids in his upstate NY town to run along the train cutting strings to steal them.

Apparently my wife's great-uncle or great-great-uncle was a reporter who rode with Pancho Villa and got in lots of trouble with the US Army, which he'd previously been a member of.

The great-aunts did bring a bit of tequila back from Mexico during Prohibition, but I gather just personal use.

Sounds marvelous!! My interest in the silent era went from passing amusement to genuine interest recently when I found out Bert Lindley was my great grandfather. He was a contract actor for MGM, some without credit or a modern way to find him. Have a bunch of old stills if you'd like to some.
