She is such a sweetheart! She didn't have a great start to life (she and Mojo are "labbies," they were research animals), so she didn't trust us at first. But she's learning to trust humans, and she's becoming very playful and affectionate, like any healthy ferret!

Ferrets are my dream pet, but I’ve heard so many horror stories. It seems like they have an unusually high chance of just kind of dying randomly, and everything about their care (both medical and regular) seems craaaaaaazy expensive… :(

I've had ferrets for over 25 years, and dying randomly isn't really an issue as long as you feed them the proper food (no starch, they're obligate carnivores) and treat them well (make sure they have plenty of play time; don't keep them in a cage all day).

Elderly ferrets (6-8 years old) do need vet care, and that can add up. Most people think ferrets are expensive and a lot of work because they are, compared to a small animal like a hamster or gerbil. But compare them to a dog or a cat, and they map pretty closely in terms of cost and effort required

Yeah, I’m not in the US and that’s likely where the price disparity comes from.

That said, the one person I know personally that had ferrets had one die of cancer younger than 2 years old, and another swallow a small object and die in removal surgery… :(

my Iko will be 6 in August, and so far the only vet bills so far: vaccinations. She's in perfect health, plays a lot, is on a well balanced diet of meat-based kibble and her favourite food (chicken). And we go for walks almost every day. She has a cage, but is free-roam at home. (We're in France)

Our ferret started hiding and sleeping. So we went to the store and checked out what they had. I picked up one and the staff warned us he was a trouble maker, constantly annoying the others. They were shocked we wanted him. The other ferret is now forced to play whether he wants to or not.

He’s lost weight, gained his energy back and is playing with the new ferret and the dog again. He’s still not as active as the new ferret but much more active than he was before.

That's great to hear! Sounds like he needed a shake-up. It's so important for us to be in tune with our little friends, so we can give them what they need.
